(Shifman, Mikhail A. (1999). Foreword. World Scientific Lecture Notes in Physics 62. Lectures on Particle Physics and Field Theory; 1. World Scientific.) : The ITEP was more than an institute, it was our refuge where the insanity of the surrounding reality was, if not eliminated, reduced to a bearable level. Doing physics there was something which gave a meaning to our lives, making it interesting and even happy.

Earlier this month, Idaho Governor Brad Little became the first Republican governor to sign into law a bill that restricts educators from teaching a concept called critical race theory. And more could follow: Nearly a dozen states have introduced similar Republican-backed bills that would direct what students can and cannot be taught about the role of slavery in American history and the ongoing effects of racism in the U.S. today. But critics say the legislation isn't aimed at what children are learning in the classroom. <...>
Critical race theory is not typically "taught in elementary and secondary schools because it is based in legal theory," Jazmyne Owens, of public policy think tank New America, told CBS News. She said the wave of legislation "is really aimed at erasing and whitewashing American history."
Owens pointed to a Texas bill that just passed in the state's House that opponents say bans any discussion of privilege and white supremacy. "In the long term, bills of this nature, and those that intend to censor the way that race and systemic racism is discussed in the classroom are way more harmful to students," she said.
"Protecting education means being honest about the parts of our history that hurt, particularly chattel slavery, and being proactive in ensuring that we end current reproductions of racism and inequity in classrooms and beyond," Owens said.
Many of the state bills have similar goals as two executive orders former President Donald Trump introduced in 2020, one that called for patriotic education and a one that sought to ban diversity training and training on critical race theory for federal workers. President Joe Biden has revoked both.

The Idaho legislature finds that tenets outlined in subsection
23 (3)(a) of this section, often found in "critical race theory," undermine the
24 objectives outlined in subsection (1) of this section and exacerbate and
25 inflame divisions on the basis of sex, race, ethnicity, religion, color, na26 tional origin, or other criteria in ways contrary to the unity of the nation
27 and the well-being of the state of Idaho and its citizens.
28 (3) In accordance with section 6, article IX of the constitution of the
29 state of Idaho and section 67-5909, Idaho Code:
30 (a) No public institution of higher education, school district, or pub31 lic school, including a public charter school, shall direct or other32 wise compel students to personally affirm, adopt, or adhere to any of
33 the following tenets:
34 (i) That any sex, race, ethnicity, religion, color, or national
35 origin is inherently superior or inferior;
36 (ii) That individuals should be adversely treated on the basis of
37 their sex, race, ethnicity, religion, color, or national origin;
38 or
39 (iii) That individuals, by virtue of sex, race, ethnicity, reli40 gion, color, or national origin, are inherently responsible for
41 actions committed in the past by other members of the same sex,
42 race, ethnicity, religion, color, or national origin.
2
1 (b) No distinction or classification of students shall be made on ac2 count of race or color.
3 (c) No course of instruction or unit of study directing or otherwise
4 compelling students to personally affirm, adopt, or adhere to any of the
5 tenets identified in paragraph (a) of this subsection shall be used or
6 introduced in any institution of higher education, any school district,
7 or any public school, including a public charter school.
8 (4) Nothing in this section should be construed to prohibit the re9 quired collection or reporting of demographic data by public schools or
10 public institutions of higher education.

“This bill shows a fundamental misunderstanding of Critical Race Theory. There are already nondiscrimination statutes in place to protect students from discrimination. The vague language of the statute only serves to further chill and censor discourse about implicit bias and racism and sexism in public schools and institutions.”
https://www.acluidaho.org/en/legislation/2021-hb-377-academic-censorship

Lawmakers in at least 15 states introduced bills seeking to restrict how teachers discuss racism, sexism and other social issues, according to Education Week.
While several of these bills were introduced with the stated intention of banning critical race theory in classrooms, they don’t explicitly invoke those words within the legislation. That’s also the case in Texas.
Instead, the bills use vague language with a laundry list of concepts that are barred, such as the idea that a person is inherently racist, sexist or oppressive, either consciously or unconsciously.
Also concerning to the dozens of Texas education groups and leaders who oppose the bill are the provisions that could limit teacher training on racism; prohibit private funding for some curriculum development; and keep students from earning extra credit or course credit for public policy work. Educators say the provisions would have a chilling effect on social studies classrooms and disrupt anti-racism work.
The legislation comes amid continued debate over what students should be taught about America’s complex past and present.
Advocates have implored lawmakers to ask themselves: Do you even know what this bill would do?
